Το football είναι ένα από τα δημοφιλέστερα αθλήματα στις ΗΠΑ, ιδιαίτερα στις πολιτείες του νότου. Το 1971 στην Alexandria της Virginia οι τοπικές αρχές αναγκάζονται να ενοποιήσουν τα δυο λύκεια (ένα "λευκών" και ένα "μαύρων"). Έτσι θα πρέπει τώρα να δημιουργηθεί μια ενιαία ομάδα foοtball για το καινούριο λύκειο. Οι τριβές είναι έντονες ιδιαίτερα μετά την τοποθέτηση στη θέση του προπονητή του Herman Boone. Είναι νεαρός με λίγες επιτυχίες και το "χειρότερο" έγχρωμος, παραμερίζοντας τον τοπικό πετυχημένο προπονητή Bill Yoast. Σε μια κίνηση καλής θέλησης το Boone ζητά από τον Yoast να παραμείνει σε θέση βοηθού. Το ζευγάρι των προπονητών θα συγκροτήσει την ομάδα και θα ξεκινήσουν προετοιμασία. Τα πράγματα δεν θα είναι εύκολα και οι προπονήσεις σκληρές, ενώ οι παίκτες μεταξύ τους δεν έχουν και τις καλύτερες σχέσεις. Όταν οι πρώτες νίκες έρχονται, η κοινωνία παραμένει διχασμένη ενώ ο Boone απειλείται ότι με την πρώτη ήττα θα απολυθεί. Πότε όμως θα έρθει αυτή η ήττα και τι θα συμβεί ως τότε;
