Τι υπάρχει στο μυαλό ενός παρανοϊκού Serial Killer; Φιλοσοφικό το ερώτημα στο οποίο βασίζεται η ταινία The Cell. H Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) είναι μια πρωτοπόρος παιδοψυχολόγος. Ερευνά μια νέα μέθοδο με την οποία μπαίνει στο μυαλό ενός ανθρώπου σε κώμα και τον βοηθά να επανέλθει στην πραγματικότητα. Όταν το FBI φτάνει στα χνάρια ενός δολοφόνου εκείνος πέφτει σε κώμα. Συνηθίζει να τοποθετεί τα θύματά του σε ένα ειδικό κελί το οποίο μετά από 48 ώρες αρχίζει να γεμίζει νερό. Το τελευταίο θύμα του είναι ήδη στο κελί και το FBI πρέπει να ανακαλύψει το κρησφύγετο του πριν είναι πολύ αργά. Στο σημείο αυτό ζητείται η συνδρομή της Catherine. Σκοπός της να μπει στο μυαλό του και να ανακαλύψει τον τόπο που βρίσκεται το κελί. Τα πράγματα όμως στον ανθρώπινο εγκέφαλο δεν είναι όπως τα περιμένουμε και όταν η Catherine κινδυνεύει να παγιδευτεί οι επιλογές γίνονται εξαιρετικά επικίνδυνες.
