Στο προ-εμφυλιακό τοπίο των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών της Αμερικής, ο Νεοϋορκέζος Σόλομον Νόρθαπ (Τσιούιτελ Ιτζίοφορ) ζει ως ελεύθερος Αμερικανός πολίτης. Παρότι καλλιεργημένος οικογενειάρχης και ταλαντούχος μουσικός ο Σόλομον έχει ένα σημαντικό μειονέκτημα - το χρώμα του δέρματός του δεν είναι συμβατό με εκείνο της καθεστηκυίας τάξης! Λόγω αυτού λοιπόν, η μοίρα του επιφυλάσσει μια αρκετά απρόβλεπτη έκπληξη. Ο Νόρθαπ απάγεται και πωλείται ως σκλάβος στον οπισθοδρομικό Νότο, αντιμετωπίζοντας τη βιαιότητα μιας πολωμένης κοινωνίας. Μιας κοινωνίας που παρουσιάζεται προσωποποιημένη μέσα από τα μάτια ενός σκληρού, δυνάστη σωματέμπορου, τον οποίον υποδύεται ο Μάικλ Φασμπέντερ. Διατηρώντας την πίστη του στην ανθρωπιά και στην εγγενή καλοσύνη του κόσμου, ο Σόλομον δεν χάνει ποτέ την ελπίδα και το κουράγιο του για δικαιοσύνη - και παρόλο που η μοίρα του μοιάζει απόλυτα καταδικασμένη, ο ίδιος κοιμάται και ξυπνά αναζητώντας το άρωμα της χαμένης ελευθερίας. Μέσα από την ευτυχή συγκυρία της γνωριμίας του με έναν φιλάνθρωπο Καναδό (Μπραντ Πιτ), ρεφορμιστή και πολέμιο της θανατικής καταδίκης, καταφέρνει όχι μόνο να επιζήσει μέσα σ’ αυτή τη δωδεκαετή κόλαση, αλλά να βγει αλώβητος από την απίστευτη αυτή δοκιμασία, διατηρώντας, στο ακέραιο, το ήθος και την αξιοπρέπειά του.
