Το The Walking Dead αφηγείται την ιστορία των ανθρώπων που επιβιώνουν στη Γη εβδομάδες μετά την αποκάλυψη των ζόμπι. Παρακολουθεί την ομάδα, της οποίας ηγείται ο αστυνομικός Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), κατά τη διάρκεια της αναζήτησης ενός ασφαλούς τόπου διαμονής.

Με το πέρασμα του χρόνου, οι χαρακτήρες των ανθρώπων αλλάζουν εξαιτίας της συνεχoύς επαφής τους με το θάνατο και κάποιοι από αυτούς είναι διατεθειμένοι να κάνουν τα πάντα προκειμένου να επιβιώσουν. Η σκηνοθετική προσέγγιση και κινηματογραφική ματιά του βραβευμένου με Όσκαρ Frank Darabont είναι ιδανική για την απόδοση του πνεύματος του κόμικ σε μια τηλεοπτική σειρά με αξιώσεις ταινίας. Πρωταγωνιστεί επίσης η Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break).

Το The Walking Dead βασίζεται στο ομότιτλο κόμικ του Robert Kirkman, που εκδίδεται από την Image Comics. Ο Kirkman είναι ο executive producer της σειράς, και ο τρεις φορές υποψήφιος για Oscar® Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) είναι συγγραφέας, σκηνοθέτης και παραγωγός. Η Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon, The Incredible Hulk), πρόεδρος της Valhalla Motion Pictures, ο David Alpert από το Circle of Confusion και ο Charles “Chic” Eglee (Dexter, The Shield, Dark Angel) είναι οι συμπαραγωγοί της σειράς.
