Αναζητώντας ένα καινούριο ξεκίνημα και κυνηγώντας το "Αμερικάνικο όνειρο" η Ewa Cybulski (Marion Cotillard) και η αδελφή της η Magda (Angela Sarafyan) μεταναστεύουν στη Νέα Υόρκη του 1920 αφήνοντας πίσω τους την Πολωνία. Φτάνοντας στο Νησί Έλλις, τόπο υποδοχής και ελέγχου των μεταναστών, οι γιατροί διαγιγνώσκουν ότι η Magda είναι άρρωστη και χωρίζουν τις δύο αδελφές. Στους δρόμους του Μανχάταν η Ewa μόνη και απεγνωσμένη, πέφτει θύμα του γοητευτικού Bruno Weiss (Joaquin Phoenix) που τελικά θα την οδηγήσει στην πορνεία. Μέχρι που μια μέρα η Ewa θα γνωρίσει τον μάγο Orlando, εξάδελφο του Bruno, ο οποίος θα τη γοητεύσει και σύντομα θα γίνει η μόνη της πιθανή διέξοδος από τον εφιάλτη που ζει.
