Μετά από μια εξαντλητική ημέρα στη δουλειά, ο πυροσβέστης Τζέρεμι Κόλεμαν με τους συναδέλφους αποφασίζουν να πιουν ένα ποτό να χαλαρώσουν. Όταν ο Τζέρεμι μπαίνει στην κάβα, γίνεται μάρτυρας της κτηνώδους δολοφονίας του υπαλλήλου από τον ρατσιστή Νιλ Χάγκαν. Ο Τζέρεμι πετυχαίνει να γλυτώσει τη δική του ζωή και την υπόθεση την αναλαμβάνει ο ντετέκτιβ Μάιλ Σέλα. Ο Χάγκαν συλλαμβάνεται κι ο Τζέρεμι τον αναγνωρίζει, παρότι ο ένοχος γνωρίζει καλά ποιος κρύβεται πίσω από τον καθρέφτη. Πριν τη δίκη, ο Τζέρεμι αφήνει τη δουλειά του και βρίσκεται υπό την προστασία μαρτύρων. Εκεί, μάλιστα, γνωρίζει την αστυνομικό Τάλια Ντάρχαμ και την ερωτεύεται. Όμως, ο δικηγόρος του Χάγκαν πετυχαίνει να τον βγάλει με αναστολή και η ζωή του Τζέρεμι αλλά και την Τάλια βρίσκονται σε κίνδυνο.
