Το μόνο όνειρο που δέν έκανε για τη ζωή του ο Everett Ulysses McGill (George Clooney) ήταν η καταδίκη σε καταναγκαστικά έργα. Όπως κάθε κρατούμενος που σέβεται τον εαυτό του σχεδιάζει να αποδράσει. Μαζί του θα φύγουν οι οι συγκρατούμενοί του Pete (John Torturro) και Delmar(Tim Blake Nelson). Οι τρείς άνδρες συμφωνούν να το σκάσουν αναζητώντας έναν θαμμένο θησαυρό και υποσχόμενοι μόλις τον βρούν να τον μοιραστούν σε ίσες μερίδες και κατόπιν να γυρίσουν στις οικογένειές τους. Η πορεία τους στον Αμερικάνικο νότο του 30 αρχίζει να θυμίζει Οδύσσεια αφού οι άνθρωποι του νόμου βρίσκονται στο κατόπι τους. Και δεν φτάνει αυτό. Στο δρόμο τους εμφανίζονται ένας μουσικός που βιάζεται για να τραγουδήσει σε έναν ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό, ένας μονόφθαλμος απατεώνας που πουλά Βίβλους, ο διαβόητος γκάνγκστερ Babyface Nelson, ένας Κυβερνήτης που αγωνίζεται για την επανεκλογή του, μερικές νυμφομανείς... σειρήνες, η Κου Κλουξ Κλαν και κάποια Penny (Holly Hunter), που κρύβει πολλά σε σχέση με το πρόσφατο παρελθόν του Everett - Οδυσσέα. Θα τα καταφέρουν να φτάσουν στην ... Ιθάκη...
