Η θρυλική σειρά του BBC επιστρέφει ανανεωμένη, με τους καλύτερους νέους ηθοποιούς του αγγλικού κινηματογράφου. Μια ματιά στα μυστικά και τα ήθη της αγγλικής κοινωνίας του Μεσοπολέμου, με την υπογραφή ποιότητας του BBC.

Το 1930 μια πλούσια οικογένεια εγκαταλείπει την έπαυλή της στο Λονδίνο. Τελευταία αφήνει το σπίτι η πιστή οικονόμος Rose, η οποία αναπολεί τις στιγμές που έζησε εκεί μαζί με την οικογένεια. Έξι χρόνια αργότερα, η Rose θα επιστρέψει στην έπαυλη ως οικονόμος των νέων ιδιοκτητών, μιας εύπορης οικογένειας από τις ΗΠΑ, που μετοίκισαν στην Αγγλία. Η Rose προσπαθεί να προσαρμοστεί στα νέα δεδομένα, αλλά και στα σύγχρονα ήθη ενός κόσμου που συνεχώς μεταβάλλεται, υπό το πρίσμα της ανόδου του ναζισμού, αλλά και του πολέμου που βρίσκεται προ των πυλών.

Στην έπαυλη επικρατεί ένας σαφής διαχωρισμός μεταξύ της φινέτσας και της λεπτότητας των «πάνω» ενοίκων και της σκληρής καθημερινότητας των «κάτω» ενοίκων. Και οι δύο όμως αυτοί «κόσμοι», σύντομα θα εμπλακούν σε έναν κυκεώνα ψεμάτων, μυστικών και σκανδάλων.
