Το σύμπαν αποτελείται από πολλές διαστάσεις που ονομάζονται Βασίλεια. Τα Βασίλεια αυτά διοικούνται από τους Πρεσβύτερους Θεούς. Το δικό μας Βασίλειο είναι το Βασίλειο της Γης. Αυτό αποτελεί σταυροδρόμι για τα άλλα Βασίλεια και γι' αυτό ήταν ποθητό από τις δυνάμεις του σκώτους. Για εκατοντάδες χρόνια, ο Shao Kahn ήθελε να το κατακτήσει και να το προσθέσει στη συλλογή του από κατεστραμένα Βασίλεια που είναι γνωστά ως Εξώκοσμος. Αυτό κάποια στιγμή παραλίγο να το καταφέρει, αλλά τον σταμάτησε μία ομάδα σοφών γερόντων.

Οι σοφοί γέροντες έπειτα από αυτό, ανησύχησαν για μία ενδεχόμενη εισβολή των δυνάμεων του Shao Kahn στο μέλλον και έτσι στράφηκαν προς τους Πρεσβύτερους Θεούς για μία λύση. Τη λύση αποτέλεσε ένα τουρνουά που λέγεται Θανάσιμη Μάχη, στο οποίο μαχητές από το Βασίλειο της Γης, θα αντιμετώπιζαν τους μαχητές που είναι εκπρόσωποι του Shao Kahn. Αν οι εκπρόσωποι της Γης κέρδιζαν σε αυτό, η Γη θα γλίτωνε την εισβολή.
Αν κέρδιζαν οι μαχητές του Shao Kahn, τότε αυτός θα έφτανε ολοένα και πιο κοντά στην κατάκτησή της
