Η Σέλμα, μια σχεδόν τυφλή Τσέχα μετανάστρια στις ΗΠΑ, συγκεντρώνει χρήματα για να εγχειρίσει το παιδί της που έχει την ίδια πάθηση στα μάτια, Κατηγορείται όμως για φόνο και καταδικάζεται σε θάνατο, απόφαση που αποδέχεται μοιρολατρικά, μια και τα χρήματα που απαιτούνται για την αναθεώρηση της δίκης προορίζονται για το παιδί της.

Μια ταινία έκπληξη από τον ιδιοφυή ημιπαράφρονα Λαρς Φον Τρίερ, που καταφέρνει να συγκεράσει πράγματα αντιφατικά μεταξύ τους. Το μιούζικαλ με το προλεταριακό φόντο, την μπρεχτική αποστασιοποίηση (μέσω πανέξυπνων ευρημάτων) με την αριστοτελική ταύτιση (ακολουθώντας τους κώδικες του μελοδράματος), την λαμπερή Μπιοργκ (που πραγματικά συγκλονίζει με την ερμηνεία της) με μια αντιχολιγουντιανή διάθεση. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι μια ταινία που ξεπερνά κάθε κατηγοροποίηση και ταξινόμιση, η οποία βραβεύτηκε στις Κάννες με τον Χρυσό Φοίνικα.
