1820, σε αχαρτογράφητη περιοχή της αμερικανικής υπαίθρου. Εκεί, ο Χιου Γκλας, κυνηγός και έμπορος γουνών, δέχεται επίθεση από μια αρκούδα, ενώ στη συνέχεια πέφτει θύμα ληστείας από τους συναδέλφους του, που τον αφήνουν στη μοίρα του. Ο κυνηγός, ενάντια σε όλες τις πιθανότητες, πρέπει να υπερκεράσει τον σκληρό Χειμώνα, την απειλή των ινδιάνων, με τη θέληση για εκδίκηση να είναι το μοναδικό του όπλο.
