Ήταν λίγες ώρες μετά τα Χριστούγεννα του 2004, όταν ένας σεισμός 9,2 βαθμών Ρίχτερ κλόνισε την νοτιανατολική Ασία. Το φονικό τσουνάμι που ακολούθησε προκάλεσε 230.000 θανάτους, η πλειοψηφία εξ' αυτών στην Ινδονησία. Ο Henry (Ewan McGregor) και η Maria (Naomi Watts) με τους τρείς γιούς τους βρίσκονταν στην Ταϋλάνδη απολαμβάνοντας τις εξωτικές τους διακοπές. Το τσουνάμι τους χώρισε, όμως εκείνοι δεν τα παράτησαν προσπαθώντας να ξαναενωθούν χαμένοι στην άγνωστη χώρα.
