Όταν ο Oscar Diggs, ένας ασήμαντος ταχυδακτυλουργός τσίρκου αμφίβολης ηθικής, εκσφενδονίζεται μακριά από το σκονισμένο Κάνσας στη ζωηρή Χώρα του Οz, έναν θεαματικό κόσμο γεμάτο πολύχρωμους χαρακτήρες και ονειρικά σκηνικά, θα πιστέψει ότι πέτυχε το τζάκποτ. Εκεί φήμη και πλούτος είναι όλα δικά του. Μέχρι, βέβαια, να συναντήσει τρεις πανέμορφες και μυστηριώδεις μάγισσες, που δεν έχουν πεισθεί ότι είναι ο μεγάλος μάγος που όλοι περιμένουν. Καθώς μπλέκεται χωρίς να το θέλει στα επικών διαστάσεων προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζει η Χώρα του Oz και οι κάτοικοί της, ο Oscar πρέπει να ανακαλύψει ποιος είναι καλός και ποιος κακός πριν είναι πολύ αργά. Χρησιμοποιώντας τις ταχυδακτυλουργικές κατεργαριές του — ακόμη και μια μικρή δόση μαγείας — ο Oscar μεταμορφώνεται στον Oz, το Μεγάλο και Παντοδύναμο μάγο, αλλά και σε ένα καλύτερο άνθρωπο.
