Ένας εγκληματίας, ο Ντράιβερ, συλλαμβάνεται από τη μεξικανική αστυνομία, όταν προσπαθεί να περάσει τα σύνορα με ένα αυτοκίνητο γεμάτο κλεμμένα χρήματα. Οδηγείται στην κακόφημη φυλακή El Pueblito και, ενώ κανείς δε γνωρίζει το μέρος όπου κρατείται, τον επισκέπτεται ένας διεφθαρμένος υπάλληλος της Αμερικανικής Πρεσβείας, ο οποίος τον εκβιάζει πως αν δεν του δώσει χρήματα, θα τον παραδώσει στις Αρχές. Παράλληλα, ο Ντράιβερ γνωρίζεται με ένα μικρό φυλακισμένο αγόρι, που του μαθαίνει τους κανόνες επιβίωσης στη φυλακή, αλλά κρύβει ένα μεγάλο μυστικό.
