Η ζωή μοιάζει τέλεια για τον Τζον Μπρέναν (Ράσελ Κρόου), μέχρι που η σύζυγος του, Λάρα (Ελίζαμπεθ Μπανκς), συλλαμβάνεται για ένα φόνο που ισχυρίζεται πως δεν έχει διαπράξει. Τρία χρόνια μετά την καταδίκη της, ο Τζον παλεύει να κρατήσει ενωμένη την οικογένεια του και να μεγαλώσει το γιο τους, Λιουκ (Τάι Σίμπκινς). Παράλληλα συνεχίζει να διδάσκει στο κοινοτικό κολέγιο και κυνηγάει κάθε δυνατό μέσο που μπορεί να αποδείξει την αθωότητα της συζύγου του. Όταν το δικαστήριο απορρίπτει την τελευταία τους προσπάθεια για έφεση, η Λάρα αρχίζει να έχει τάσεις αυτοκτονίας και ο Τζον αποφασίζει πως υπάρχει μια μόνο πιθανή και ανεκτή λύση: να ελευθερώσει τη σύζυγο του από την φυλακή. Χωρίς να αποθαρρύνεται από τις μηδενικές πιθανότητες επιτυχίας και την δική του απειρία, καταστρώνει ένα περίπλοκο σχέδιο απόδρασης και βυθίζεται σε έναν επικίνδυνο και άγνωστο κόσμο, θέτοντας σε κίνδυνο τα πάντα για την γυναίκα που αγαπά.
