Οι ιδιοφυείς αδελφοί Τζόελ και Ίθαν Κοέν, αποδομούν όπως εκείνοι και μόνο εκείνοι ξέρουν μια πρωτότυπη ιστορία αυτοδικίας, με στόχο να φωτίσουν την ψυχοσύνθεση της πρωταγωνίστριας, μιας δεκατετράχρονης εκδικήτριας που βλέπει μπροστά στα μάτια της να δολοφονείται ο πατέρας της για μερικά δολάρια, από τους υποτακτικούς τους στο κτήμα ενώ αποφασίζει να πάρει το νόμο στα χέρια της και να αποδώσει δικαιοσύνη... Φτάνει, λοιπόν, στο Αρκάνσας με σκοπό να βρει το δειλό Τομ Τσέινι που λέγεται πως σκότωσε τον πατέρα της και ζητά τη βοήθεια ενός φιλικού προς το αλκοόλ, μονόφθαλμου, ομοσπονδιακού αστυνομικού, του Ρούστερ Κόγκμπερν, ο οποίος, παρά τις αρχικές του αντιρρήσεις, δέχεται τελικά να τη βοηθήσει, και να τον καταδιώξει. Τον Τσέινι όμως καταδιώκει και ένας άλλος αστυνομικός, ο Λα Μπιφ, που θέλει κι αυτός από την πλευρά του να τον συλλάβει και να τον παραδώσει στις αρχές του Τέξας, ώστε να δικαστεί εκεί κι εκείνος να πάρει την αμοιβή της επικήρυξής του… Οι τρεις τους τώρα, καθένας για τους δικούς του λόγους, αναζητούν τον Τσέινι δίχως να ξέρει κανείς τους πού θα τους βγάλει αυτή η περιπέτεια…
