Πάνω στα ερείπια αυτού που κάποτε αποτελούσε τις ΗΠΑ, η κυβέρνηση του έθνους του Panem διεξάγει εδώ και δεκαετίες τα ετήσια Hunger Games, κατά τα οποία επιλέγει τυχαία ένα αγόρι κι ένα κορίτσι μεταξύ 12 και 18 χρονών από κάθε μία από τις δώδεκα φτωχές και αποκλεισμένες μεταξύ τους επαρχίες που ελέγχει η ηγεμονεύουσα επαρχία Capitol. Τα 24 παιδιά καλούνται να δώσουν μεταξύ τους μία μάχη στο δάσος από το οποίο μόνο ένα μπορεί να βγει ζωντανό. Ο θεσμός μεταδίδεται πανεθνικά και ζωντανά, ως μέσο επίδειξης δύναμης και τιμωρίας των υπηκόων για μία αποτυχημένη εξέγερση που κάποτε επιχείρησαν. Αυτή τη φορά, έχει έρθει η ώρα της Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) να μπει στη μάχη, για την οποία ορισμένοι διαγωνιζόμενοι προετοιμάζονται καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια της νεαρής ζωής τους.
