Σε ένα μακρινό μέλλον, που το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της γης δεν είναι πια κατοικήσιμο, ο κόσμος έχει χωριστεί σε δύο περιοχές, την ομοσπονδία της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας και την Αποικία. Ο Douglas Quaid, κάτοικος Αποικίας, είναι ένας εργάτης εργοστασίου με όνειρα απόδρασης από την πεζή καθημερινότητά του, παρά το γεγονός πως είναι παντρεμένος με μια πανέμορφη σύζυγο. Όταν μαθαίνει για την Rekall, μια εταιρεία που υπόσχεται την εμφύτευση αναμνήσεων τόσο ζωντανών, που ο πελάτης δε μπορεί να τις διαχωρίσει από τις πραγματικές, ο Quaid σπεύδει να επισκεφθεί ένα υποκατάστημά της. Όταν όμως η επέμβαση πάει στραβά, ο Quaid βρίσκεται κυνηγημένος από την αστυνομία.
