Η Κάθλιν Κέλι, ιδιοκτήτρια ενός μικρού βιβλιοπωλείου, διατηρεί δεσμό με τον Φρανκ Ναβάσκι, δημοφιλή δημοσιογράφο. Όμως, παράλληλα τον "απατά", καθώς διατηρεί ηλεκτρονική επικοινωνία με έναν άλλον άνδρα, ανώνυμα. Ξαφνικά, τα πράγματα παίρνουν απρόσμενη τροπή, καθώς το μικρό μαγαζί της θα κινδυνέψει από χρεωκοπία.

Στην απέναντι ακριβώς γωνία, ο Τζον Φοξ ανοίγει το δικό του βιβλιοπωλείο, που πουλά σε απίστευτα χαμηλές τιμές. Η Κάθλιν επισκέπτεται τον Τζον στο μαγαζί του για να συζητήσει μαζί του, αλλά τελικά απογοητεύεται από την απότομη συμπεριφορά του. Όμως, ο Τζον, που διατηρεί κι αυτός ηλεκτρονική επικοινωνία με μια ανώνυμη κοπέλα, σύντομα θα ανακαλύψει πως η κοπέλα αυτή δεν είναι άλλη από την Κάθλιν...
