Τα γεγονότα της ταινίας λαμβάνουν χώρα στην σημερινή Αλάσκα και την πόλη Νομ, οπού ετησίως δυσανάλογος αριθμός του πληθυσμού αναφέρεται ως αγνοούμενος. Παρά τις πολλαπλές έρευνες του FBI η αλήθεια δεν αποκαλύφθηκε ποτέ. Μία ψυχολόγος, η Δρ Αμπιγκέιλ Τάιλερ, ξεκινάει να βιντεοσκοπεί τις συνεδρίες από τραυματισμένους ασθενείς και αναπάντεχα ανακαλύπτει ενοχλητικές αλήθειες σχετικά με τις απαγωγές που έχουν καταγραφεί.
