Στο κοντινο μελλον η εξελιξη του ανθρωπινου ειδους εχει οδηγησει στην εμφανιση μεταλλαγμενων ανθρωπων οι οποιοι κατεχουν ειδικες δυναμεις. Μοναχα που ο φοβος της ανθρωποτητας για τα νεα ειδη εχει δημιουργησει ενα ασφυκτικο ρατσιστικο κλιμα. Ο ρατσισμος αυτος ειναι που θα οδηγησει και στη συγκρουση μεταξυ των μεταλλαγμενων. Συγκεκριμενα μεταξυ του καθηγητη Ξαβιε (αρχηγου των X-MEN) που θελει να πεισει με ειρηνικο τροπο τους κοινους ανθρωπους οτι οι μεταλλαγμενοι δεν αποτελουν κινδυνο απο τη φυση τους και του Μαγκνετο που με τη βοηθεια μιας μηχανης θελει να επιταχυνει τη διαδικασια μεταλλαξης σε ολους τους ανθρωπους. Στη συγκρουση αυτη ιδιαιτερο ρολο θα παιξουν ο Λογκαν, ενας μεταλλαγμενος χωρις παρελθον, και ενα νεαρο κοριτσι η Ρογκ. Οι τελευταιοι στη προσπαθεια αναζητησης ταυτοτητας θα βρεθουν αναμεσα στο «παιχνιδι» των Ξαβιε και Μαγκνετο.
