Ένας επιστήμονας, φίλος του μυστικού πράκτορα Ίθαν Χαντ, ζητά από τον τελευταίο να λάβει τα μέτρα ασφαλείας του κατά τη διάρκεια του αεροπορικού ταξιδιού του από την Αυστραλία στην Ατλάντα των ΗΠΑ. Κατά τη διάρκεια της πτήσης, τα πράγματα παίρνουν απρόβλεπτη τροπή όταν ο Ίθαν Χαντ δολοφονεί ξαφνικά τον επιστήμονα και κλέβει τη βαλίτσα με τα έγγραφά του!
Σύντομα γίνεται γνωστό πως ο δολοφόνος του επιστήμονα ήταν ο Σον Άμπροουζ, πρώην συνάδελφος του Χαντ, εξπέρ στις μεταμφιέσεις και, τώρα πια, επικεφαλής μιας ομάδας τρομοκρατών. Η βαλίτσα περιείχε το αντίδοτο σε έναν θανάσιμο ιό με την ονομασία «Χίμαιρα». Αυτό που απομένει για τον Άμπροουζ και τους συνεργάτες του είναι να βρουν τον ιό και να φροντίσουν για την παγκόσμια εξάπλωσή του. Ο Ίθαν Χαντ αναλαμβάνει την αποστολή να διεισδύσει στο κύκλωμα των τρομοκρατών και να βρει και να καταστρέψει τον ιό προτού είναι πολύ αργά. Σ’ αυτή την αποστολή θα βρει βοήθεια από τη Νάια Χολ, επαγγελματία διαρρήκτη και πρώην κοπέλα του Άμπροουζ...
