Στην πόλη της Νέας Υόρκης σε μια γειτονιά γνωρίζονται τρία άτομα ύστερα από ένα άτυχο συμβάν. Ο Melvin Udall είναι ένας περίεργος συγγραφέας που βλέπει τη ζωή του να αναποδογυρίζεται, όταν ο ομοφυλόφιλος γείτονας του (Greg Kinnear) αρρωσταίνει και του εμπιστεύεται το σκυλάκι του. Επιπλέον, η Carol, το μόνο άτομο που μπορεί να τον ανεχτεί είναι αναγκασμένη να τον εγκαταλείψει και να φροντίσει τον γιο της που είναι πολύ άρρωστος. Πρόκειται για μια υπέροχη σκηνοθεσία του James L. Brooks με πρωταγωνιστή τον εξίσου καταπληκτικό Jack Nicholson και τους συμπρωταγωνιστές του Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear, Cuba Gooding Jr.και Skeet Ulrich.
