Ο Patrick Jane είναι ντετέκτιβ και σύμβουλος στο Γραφείο Ερευνών της California (CBI) και κατέχει το ρεκόρ εξιχνίασης σοβαρών εγκλημάτων χρησιμοποιώντας την οξυμένη του παρατηρητικότητα. Στο Γραφείο ο Jane είναι γνωστός για την έλλειψη τήρησης του πρωτοκόλλου και για το ημι-διάσημο παρελθόν του ως ψυχικό μέντιουμ, ικανότητες που τώρα παραδέχεται πως ήταν ψεύτικες. Οι συνάδελφοί του εκτιμούν πολύ τις ικανότητές του αλλά η προϊσταμένη του Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, "Prison Break") αντιδρά στην παρουσία του στην ομάδα της, διστακτικά αναγνωρίζει την βοήθεια που της προσφέρει και τον κατηγορεί για θεατρινισμό, ναρκισσισμό και πολλά άλλα.
