Ο Kevin Lomax, ένας νεαρός, φιλόδοξος και ανερχόμενος δικηγόρος δεν έχει χάσει ποτέ μέχρι σήμερα υπόθεση και διαπρέπει σε μια μικρή κοινωνία της αμερικάνικης επαρχίας.. Αυτό το ρεκόρ του (64-0) τον κάνει να δεχτεί μια δελεαστική πρόταση από ένα από τα πιο διάσημα και ιστορικά γραφεία της Νέας Υόρκης. Η δουλειά όμως την οποία ουσιαστικά δέχεται δεν είναι αυτή ακριβώς που φαίνεται... Σε αυτό τον μοντέρνο γοτθικό μύθο, ο Keanu Reeves υποδύεται τον αχόρταγο Lomax ενώ ο Al Pacino είναι ο ιδρυτής του γνωστού δικηγορικού γραφείου που ξέρει ότι υπάρχουν υποθέσεις για να κερδιθούν και ψυχές για να χαθούν... Τώρα η ζωή του Lomax η γυναίκα του και η ψυχή του είναι σε κίνδυνο. Βρέθηκε σε μια δουλειά που θυμίζει τον επίγειο παράδεισο, ο οποίος όμως μπορεί να τον οδηγήσει κατευθείαν στην κόλαση.
