Κανείς δεν είναι πάνω από το νόμο. Ο Φρέντι Χέφλιν είναι σερίφης μιας μικρής πόλης στο Νιου Τζέρσεϊ, όπου ζουν κυρίως αστυνομικοί. Όταν αναλαμβάνει μια πολύπλοκη υπόθεση, έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με τη διαφθορά μέσα στους κόλπους της αστυνομίας... Τώρα καλείται να κάνει μια επικίνδυνη επιλογή και να ταχθεί είτε με το νόμο είτε με ανθρώπους που πάντα θαύμαζε. Ο Χάρβεϊ Καϊτέλ, ο Ρόμπερτ Ντε Νίρο και ο Ρέι Λιότα συνθέτουν ένα εξαιρετικό καστ, ενώ ο Σιλβέστερ Σταλόνε δίνει μία από τις καλύτερες και λιγότερο συνηθισμένες ερμηνείες της καριέρας του.
