«One Step Behind» αρχίζει με το θάνατο του Svedberg, φίλου και συναδέλφου του Wallanders. Καταρχάς η αστυνομία θεωρεί ότι είναι μια αυτοκτονία αλλά σύντομα σκοτεινά, βαθιά μυστικά έρχονται στην επιφάνεια γίνονται προφανές ότι ο Svedberg δολοφονήθηκε. Αυτή είναι η αρχή του ταξιδιού όπου ο Wallander όχι μόνο έχει εξιχνιάσει τον δολοφόνο του φίλου του αλλά επίσης κάνοντας αυτό, ανακαλύπτει ποιος ήταν πραγματικά ο φίλος του. Καθώς η έρευνα προχωρά γίνεται καθαρό ότι η δολοφονία του Svedberg συνδέεται με τη δολοφονία τριών εφήβων νωρίτερα εκείνο το καλοκαίρι. Το παρασκήνιο γίνεται όλο και περισσότερο σαφής και φανερό ότι ο Svedberg δολοφονήθηκε.
