Η αστυνομία αφού ερευνά ένα ανατιναγμένο σκάφος στη μαρίνα του Σαν Πέδρο ανακαλύπτει είκοσι επτά πτώματα και ναρκω-χρήματα αξίας ενενήντα ενός εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων.Οι μόνοι επιζώντες είναι ένας πολύ τρομαγμένος Ούγγρος τρομοκράτης ο οποίος έχει υποστεί βαριά εγκαύματα και ο Βέρμπαλ Κιντ, ένας ανάπηρος μικροκακοποιός. Παρά τη θέλησή του ο Κιντ πείθεται να περιγράψει ακριβώς τι έγινε στο σκάφος.Η ιστορία που ξεκινά έξι εβδομάδες νωρίτερα όταν η αστυνομία της Νέας Υόρκης έχει συλλάβει πέντε κακοποιούς αναζητώντας απελπισμένα υπόπτους για ένα κλεμμένο φορτηγό.
