Η κριτική ματιά - διανθισμένη με χιούμορ και έντονα παγανιστικό λυρισμό - στα πολιτικά και κοινωνικά τεκταινόμενα της σύγχρονης Γιουγκοσλαβίας, που σε άλλες ταινίες του Κουστουρίτσα δήλωνε συνεχώς παρούσα αλλά μονίμως στο φόντο, εδώ έρχεται και εγκαθίσταται στο κέντρο της ιστορίας και αλληγορεί έξοχα και συγκλονιστικά. Σατιρίζει με καυστικότητα τον τιτοϊσμό, που βρίσκεται στη βάση του πρόσφατου αδελφοκτόνου εμφυλίου πολέμου και φτιάχνει εικόνες εκπληκτικής ομορφιάς, θλίψης και σπαραγμού, αλλά και μαγείας που φέρνουν στο νου την έξαρση και την γοητεία των ταινιών του Φελίνι με την μουσική του Μπρέγκοβιτς να υπογραμμίζει άλλοτε τις χαρές και τις εξάρσεις κι άλλοτε τους σπαραγμούς και τον θρήνο των ανθρώπων. Μια ταινία ηφαιστειώδης, επικών διαστάσεων, που βραβεύτηκε με το Χρυσό Φοίνικα στο φεστιβάλ των Καννών.
