Κατά τη διάρκεια μιας μέρας αγώνων αυτοκινήτου που κανονικά θα έπρεπε να είναι γεμάτη δράση και συγκίνηση, ο Νικ Ο'Μπάνον έχει ένα τρομακτικό προμήνυμα: μια πλειάδα παράξενων γεγονότων προκαλούν μαζικές συγκρούσεις αυτοκινήτων. Τα φλεγόμενα οχήματα εκρήγνυνται, τα θραύσματα σκοτώνουν βίαια τους φίλους του, ενώ το άνω διάζωμα των κερκίδων υποχωρεί και τον καταπλακώνει. Ξυπνώντας από αυτόν τον τρομακτικό εφιάλτη, ο Νικ καταλαμβάνεται από πανικό και πείθει την αγαπημένη του, Λόρι και τους φίλους τους, Τζάνετ και Χαντ να φύγουν… δευτερόλεπτα πριν γίνει πραγματικότητα ο τρομακτικός εφιάλτης του. Πιστεύοντας ότι έχουν ξεγελάσει τον θάνατο, οι τέσσερις φίλοι αντιμετωπίζουν διαφορετικά τη ζωή. Δυστυχώς όμως, για τον Νικ και την Λόρι, αυτό ήταν μόνο η αρχή. Καθώς τα προμηνύματα του Νικ συνεχίζονται και οι επιζήσαντες των συγκρούσεων αρχίζουν να πεθαίνουν ένας-ένας με όλο και πιο βάναυσο τρόπο, ο Νικ πρέπει να βρει τον τρόπο να ξεγελάσει μια για πάντα τον θάνατο, πριν φτάσει και γι'αυτόν η αποφράδα ώρα.
