Σ' ένα στρατόπεδο στην Τζόρτζια, τον Οκτώβρη του 1948, ο ταγματάρχης Πέντερτον διατάζει τον στρατιώτη Γουίλιαμς να καθαρίσει το γρασίδι μπροστά στο σπίτι του, ενώ η γυναίκα του Ελεονόρα κάνει ιππασία με το άλογό της και με συντροφιά τον εραστή της. Στην επιστροφή της, μιλάει με τον Γουίλιαμς, που συνήθως φροντίζει το άλογό της, ενώ γράφει προσκλήσεις για ένα πάρτι. Το βράδυ η Πέντερτον και οι Λάνγκτον δειπνούν μαζί. Ο άνδρας της, που δεν έχει σεξουαλικές σχέσεις με τη γυναίκα του, αδιαφορεί για το φλερτ της με τον Λάνγκτον. Η γυναίκα του τελευταίου Αλισον αντίθετα, υποφέρει, αλλά είναι και άρρωστη από τότε που πέθανε το παιδί της. Ο Γουίλιαμς έχει τη μανία να παρακολουθεί κρυφά τους άλλους, ειδικά την Ελεονόρα. Τη νύχτα μπαίνει κρυφά στο χωριστό δωμάτιό της και την παρακολουθεί σιωπηλά ενώ κοιμάται...
