Ο καλοκάγαθος και ιδιόρρυθμος Mark Whitacre είναι ένας πολλά υποσχόμενος ανώτατος υπάλληλος στην μεγάλη πολυεθνική ADL. Δουλεύει φιλότιμα, αγαπά την οικογένειά του, σέβεται την ADL και έχει ιδιαίτερη αδυναμία στο... καλαμπόκι, το κύριο προϊόν της επιχείρησης. Ανεβαίνοντας σταδιακά στην εταιρική ιεραρχία, συνειδητοποιεί ότι οι ανώτερες θέσεις εκτός από πλεονεκτήματα κρύβουν κι αρκετές παγίδες, όπως παραδείγματος χάριν το γεγονός ότι πρέπει να συμπράττει σε μερικές όχι και τόσο ηθικές, ούτε και τόσο νόμιμες πράξεις για λογαριασμό της εταιρίας. Εκβιασμοί, δωροδοκίες, προώθηση και δημιουργία καρτέλ -θα ανεχτεί πολλά, μέχρι που κάποια στιγμή ο φιλήσυχος οικογενειάρχης Mark αποφασίζει να αντιδράσει καταγγέλλοντας την πολυεθνική στο FBI. Με τις πληροφορίες που τους δίνει, θα μεταμορφωθεί σύντομα σε ερασιτέχνη πράκτορα, δουλεύοντας για χρόνια ολόκληρα ως πληροφοριοδότης των μυστικών υπηρεσιών
