Στο τρένο Βουδαπέστη-Παρίσι, στις 16 Ιουνίου δυο ταξιδιώτες γνωρίζονται. Και οι δυο περίπου στα 23, δίχως σύντροφο και άλλη παρέα μαζί τους. Εκείνος είναι ένας ερωτεύσιμος αμερικανός ονόματι Jesse (Ethan Hawke) και εκείνη μια χαριτωμένη γαλλίδα με τ’ όνομα Céline (Julie Delpy). Ο Jesse πηγαίνει στη Βιέννη, από όπου φεύγει η πτήση του για Αμερική, ενώ η Céline πηγαίνει σπίτι της, στο Παρίσι. Λίγο πριν φτάσουν στην πρωτεύουσα της Αυστρίας, αρχίζουν να συνομιλούν και καταλήγουν στο εστιατόριο του τρένου να μιλάνε περί ανεμών και υδάτων. Η ώρα περνά γρήγορα και πριν το καταλάβουν η αμαξοστοιχία φτάνει στο σταθμό της Βιέννης. Ο Jesse όμως δεν θέλει να αφήσει την κουβέντα στην μέση και έτσι προσκαλεί και προκαλεί την Celine να κατεβεί μαζί του. Αυτή δέχεται και έτσι καταλήγουν να τριγυρίζουν στην πόλη μέχρι το επόμενο πρωί. Περνούν την ώρα τους κάνοντας βόλτες, πηγαίνοντας σε λούνα παρκ και μπαρ, παίζοντας βελάκια και φλιπεράκι και κυρίως συζητώντας. Σχεδόν αναπόφευκτα ερωτεύονται ο ένας τον άλλο και αποφασίζουν να ενδώσουν σε μια τελευταία παρόρμηση. Να δώσουν ραντεβού σ’ έξι μήνες στο ίδιο σημείο...
