Ο Κυβερνήτης Μάικ Μόρις (Τζορτζ Κλούνεϊ) διεκδικεί το χρίσμα των Δημοκρατικών για τις προεδρικές εκλογές των ΗΠΑ. Στο πλευρό του, ως εκπρόσωπος τύπου, στέκεται ο νεαρός Στίβεν Μάιερς (Ράιαν Γκόσλινγκ), που είναι διατεθειμένος να δώσει τον καλύτερο εαυτό του για να κερδίσει ο Μόρις την πολύτιμη υποψηφιότητα. Όμως ο δρόμος προς την εξουσία δεν είναι στρωμένος με ροδοπέταλα: μυστικές συμφωνίες, ανήθικοι πολιτικοί χειρισμοί, υπόγεια παιχνίδια κυριαρχίας και ένας εκρηκτικός συνδυασμός φιλοδοξίας, πίστης, προδοσίας, εκδίκησης συνθέτουν αυτό το έντονο πολιτικό θρίλερ. Στους πρωταγωνιστικούς ρόλους συναντάμε ένα λαμπερό καστ, που στο σύνολό του έχει αποσπάσει 3 βραβεία Όσκαρ, 13 υποψηφιότητες για Όσκαρ, 6 Χρυσές Σφαίρες και 23 υποψηφιότητες στις Χρυσές Σφαίρες.
