Οι μυστικές κυβερνητικές υπηρεσίες των Η.Π.Α. έβαλαν όλα τα μέσα (και τα δυνατά) τους στον βιολογικό πόλεμο και ανακάλυψαν έναν νέο ιο, ο οποίος εισβάλει στον ανθρώπινο οργανισμό με την μορφή γρίπης, τον εξασθενεί και προκαλεί τον θάνατό του έπειτα από 6-12 ώρες.Ένα τρομερό λάθος στα εργαστήρια κάνει τον ιο αυτόν να ξεχυθεί και ο φύλακας της πύλης, ο οποίος έτρομος προσπαθεί να αποδράσει απ'το μέρος αυτό, γίνεται ο φορέας που θα μεταφέρει τον ιο στον έξω κόσμο.Ο κόσμος αρχίζει να χάνεται όσο ο ιος της θανατηφόρας γρίπης εισβάλει σε κάθε σπίτι, σε κάθε μέρος και σε κάθε πολιτεία, και όλα μοιάζουν σαν την επερχόμενη (και αναμενώμενη) Δευτέρα Παρουσία, που αρκετοί θρησκόληπτοι έβλεπαν στα οράματά τους τόσα και τόσα χρόνια.Οι επιζώντες είναι ελάχιστοι...Όσοι είχαν ανοσία στην γρίπη, είχαν, επίσης και έναν σκοπό.Θα έπρεπε να διαλέξουν σε ποιο απ'τα δύο στρατόπεδα θα ενταχθούν.Το στρατόπεδο...
