Η ταινία πραγματεύεται τα δύο πρώτα ταξίδια του Κολόμβου στο Νέο Κόσμο και την εγκαθίδρυση ενός αποικιοκρατικού καθεστώτος εκμετάλλευσης του πλούτου της νέας ηπείρου. Η αυλή της ισπανικής δυναστείας, ο επίμονος οραματιστής, ο διάπλους του Ατλαντικού, η ζούγκλα, οι Ινδιάνοι, οι μάχες, το μεγαλειώδες θέαμα αποτελούν τις σταθερές της υπερπαραγωγής που γυρίστηκε για τον εορτασμό των πεντακοσίων ετών από την ανακάλυψη της Αμερικής.
