Στην ηλιόλουστη και θαλασσοδαρμένη Χαβάη, η καθημερινότητα δεν είναι καθόλου διαφορετική απ' αυτήν στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο. Η γυναίκα του Matt King (George Clooney), Ελίζαμπεθ, νοσηλεύεται στο νοσοκομείο, ύστερα από ατύχημα που είχε με το σκάφος. Η κατάστασή της είναι κρίσιμη και ο Matt καλείται μετά από πολύ καιρό να προσέχει εξ ολοκλήρου την μικρή του κόρη. Η σχέση του μαζί της, καθώς και με την γυναίκα του, ήταν σχεδόν ανύπαρκτη, εξαιτίας της πολυάσχολης φύσης του δικηγορικού επαγγέλματος, αλλά και των αναγκών που δημιουργεί η μεγάλη ακίνητη κληρονομιά του. Όταν μαθαίνει ότι η κρίσιμη κατάσταση της γυναίκας του είναι μη αναστρέψιμη, πηγαίνει να βρει την μεγάλη του κόρη για να τον βοηθήσει. Εκείνη του αποκαλύπτει ότι η μητέρα της τον απατούσε. Ο Matt αρχίζει να ξεκαθαρίζει συναισθήματα και προτεραιότητες, και ταξιδεύει μαζί με τις κόρες του στο νησί Κουάι για να βρει τον εραστή της Ελίζαμπεθ. Το ταξίδι αυτό θα τους σημαδέψει για πάντα...
