Όταν ο επί μακρό γερουσιαστής Καμ Μπρέιντι (Γουίλ Φέρελ) διαπράττει ένα σημαντικό ατόπημα σε δημόσια εμφάνισή του λίγο πριν τις επερχόμενες εκλογές, δύο πάμπλουτοι επιχειρηματίες αποφασίζουν να κατεβάσουν στην πολιτική αρένα έναν αντίπαλο υποψήφιο και να κερδίσουν την υποστήριξη της Βόρειας Καρολίνας.

Ο άνθρωπός τους; Ο αθώος Μάρτι Χάγκινς (Ζακ Γαλιφιανάκης), που δουλεύει ως διευθυντής του τοπικού Κέντρου Τουρισμού.

Αρχικά, ο Μάρτι μοιάζει ως η ατυχέστερη δυνατή επιλογή, αλλά με τη βοήθεια και την υποστήριξη των δύο χορηγών του, ενός σκληροπυρηνικού επιτελείου και των πολιτικών διασυνδέσεων της οικογένειάς του, πολύ σύντομα θα γίνει ένας άξιος διεκδικητής που θα βάλει σε έγνοιες τον χαρισματικό Καμ.

Καθώς η ημέρα των εκλογών πλησιάζει, οι δύο υποψήφιοι βρίσκονται εγκλωβισμένοι σε μια ατέρμονη μάχη, με τις ύβρεις να κλιμακώνονται γρήγορα σε βιαιοπραγίες και τραυματισμούς, λασπολογία και πισώπλατα μαχαιρώματα.
