Γιος του Δία, θεού των ουρανών και των κεραυνών - πρώτου μεταξύ των θεών του Ολύμπου - και της θνητής Αλκμήνης είχε απίστευτες δυνάμεις αλλά και μια φοβερή εχθρό, την Ήρα, σύζυγο του Δία η οποία διαρκώς τον δοκίμαζε και του εναντιωνόταν. Αυτός λοιπόν ο ήρωας είναι ο πρωταγωνιστής της ομώνυμης αμερικάνικης σειράς που ξεκίνησε να προβάλλεται το 1994 - 1995 και σύντομα ήρθε και στην Ελλάδα, όπου προβλήθηκε με αρκετή επιτυχία.
Στο πλάι του ο Ηρακλής είχε τον παιδικό του φίλο Ιόλαο, με τη βοήθεια του οποίου μαχόταν το κακό, βοηθώντας τους ανυπεράσπιστους θνητούς από την κακία των θεών. Συχνά στις ιστορίες τους εμφανίζονταν και άλλοι χαρακτήρες όπως ο Αυτόλυκος, ο βασιλιάς των κλεφτών, πονηρός αλλά καλόκαρδος, η γνωστή μας Ζήνα, ο Σαλμόνιος, απατεωνίσκος/ κομπιναδόρος που αποτέλεσε - σύμφωνα με τη σειρά πάντα - τον πρώτο manager της αρχαιότητας, ο Falafel (προπροπροπάππους του McDonald), o Τζόξερ, γκαφατζής wannabe ήρωας, αλλά και πλήθος θεών της αρχαιότητας όπως ο Δίας, ο Άρης, η Αφροδίτη και άλλοι.
